چکیده

Ammonia in water is either unionized ammonia (NH3) or the ammonium ion (NH4). The techniques used to measure ammonia provide a value that is the sum of both forms. The value is reported as “total ammonia” or simply “ammonia.” (In this publication, “ammonia” refers to the sum of both forms; the specific forms will be referred to as appropriate.) The relative proportion of the two forms present in water is mainly affected by pH. Un-ionized ammonia is the toxic form and predominates when pH is high. Ammonium ion is relatively nontoxic and predominates when pH is low. In general, less than 10% of ammonia is in the toxic form when pH is less than 8.0. However, this proportion increases dramatically as pH increases (Fig. 1). VI PR December 2004 SRAC Publication No. 4603

Influence of Probiotics on Water Quality and Fish Yield in Fish Ponds

Increased production of fish through intense culture practices often leads to not only stress and disease problems but also alteration in water quality. The organic wastes and bad water quality influence the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Bioremediation using pond probiotics is considered a promising way to circumvent these problems. For this study, three earthen fish ponds stocked with P...

Nitrogen transformations and balance in channel catfish ponds

A nitrogen (N) budget was developed for four, 400-m ponds stocked with 550 channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) fingerlings that were fed to satiation daily for 133 days with a ration containing 4.85% N. Feed accounted for 87.9% of the N input to ponds. Abundant N from ammonia (NH3), ammonium (NH4 ), and nitrate (NO3 ) and the high total N: total phosphorus ratio in pond waters prevented appre...

Pd/a Crsp Eighteenth Annual Technical Report

Colossoma macropomum growth performance did not significantly differ in trials conducted in ponds at 2,500, 3,250, and 4,000 fish ha-1 in Iquitos, Peru. Fish initially weighing 3.4 g were fed a locally prepared diet (26.7% crude protein; 9.0% crude lipid) in rations ranging from 3 to 5% body weight per day. Fish were harvested after 168 days and had mean weights of 374.7, 307.7, and 287.0 g for...

Evaluation of Poultry By-product Meal in Commercial Diets for Hybrid Striped Bass, Morone chrysops ♀×Morone saxatilis ♂, in Pond Production

The efficacy of replacing fish meal with petfood-grade poultry by-product meal (PBM) on an ideal protein basis in commercial diets for hybrid striped bass (HSB) was evaluated under production conditions in pond culture. A generic production diet (GEN) for HSB was formulated to contain 45% protein, 12% lipid, and 3.7 kcal/kg. Protein in the generic diet was supplied by a mix of animal and plant ...

Effects of Alum on the Quality of Aquaculture Effluents in Settling Ponds

The effectiveness of alum (aluminum sulfate) in reducing the concentrations of potential pollutants in pond effluents was investigated in catfish production ponds. Application of alum at 50 mg/l to water remaining in ponds immediately after seining for harvest did not generally result in significantly greater removal of nutrients and solids than did settling alone, although removal rates of som...
